Harry Brown Character Comparison - Age

How is youth and the elderly presented as opposites?

Stereotypes:
Youth - taking drugs, they are disobedient, shown together as a gang
Elderly - gentle, on his own

Differences:
Old man is shown all on his own while youth is shown as a gang together.

Status and Power:
Harry Brown is shown to have power as at one point he is standing above them, looking down at the place they are in. However, because they freighter him, he takes a longer route to where he is going as he hears the youth gang and decides not to go that way, so this is showing that the youth have power as they make decisions for him.

Mise-en-Scene:
Youth is presented as mischievous at the beginning as the lighting is really dark to start off with and then they are shown as very energetic as the lighting very quickly changes to being very bright. Harry Brown is shown as a natural stereotype of an elderly man as the lighting is a natural light which shows the naturism from him, there is also a element of misty dark light in this which has a tint of yellow which reflects his life.

The props in both clips are very important to the scenes, in the youth clip we are shown them taking cannabis out of a pipe which is representing youth as drug abusers. This drug also affects the editing as we are feeling what they are, as this drug speeds everything up which puts us in a perspective of these actors. In the Harry Brown clip, we see him use an inhaler but this is for health reasons which is showing that he is taking this to stay alive while the youth are abusing these drugs and have a chance of dying from taking theses drugs, they are being self destructive.

The costumes worn may challenge the stereotypes, as the youth are usually represented as beautiful and elderly, the opposite. But we are shown the youth wearing hoodies, nod not crying about their appearance. Whereas Harry Brown's costume is the opposite as he is wearing a suit with shiny shoes, this is shown as h is old fashioned. He is also shown caring about his appearance, he has self respect for himself, this could be shown as that he is the beautiful one while the youth look untidy and scruffy.

Editing:
For the youth, the editing is very fast paced, sharp and many quick cuts are used, this is used to show the aggression of the youth, it could also be used to show violence amongst them, along with energetic and strong. In the Harry Brown sequence, it is started with a slow fade when he wakes up which is showing his personality and is also showing that this is an old man who is very slows, this slow editing could be making Harry look as if he has a disibility with these longer shots and tat he is very frail. The slow editing could also show us that this is his life everyday, it is very slow paced and all the same and very boring. It could be showing us that he is waiting, waiting to pass away. All the shots in this Harry Brown sequence are slow fades or cross dissolves which are all very gentle, emphasising Harry.

The juxtaposition of putting these two clips next to each other is too emphasise the difference between these two age ranges.

Sound:
The music when we are shown th youth is very loud, upbeat which showed the aggression amongst them. The fact that the editors didn't add much sound into Harry's sequence, shows the loneliness of him because it is all very quiet and not much is going on around him. In the Harry Brown sequence, there is a radio sound showing that he has to listen to the radio as he is lonely and doesn't have much else to listen to. On the radio, we hear a news report that a woman has just been killed which we know is done by the outh as we just saw them being childish, immature and not careful when they are shooting.

Camera:
In the youth clip, there are shots when they are on the bikes where the shot is filmed on a camera phone, this is to show tat the quality is poor, is shaky and handheld. This has been done to make the audience feel like part of their gang. In the Harry Brown sequence, a long shot of him is used which is too show his loneliness as there is no one around him.
