Reflection on Coronation Street on 15th Dec

- Two men having conversation and equal shots are used on them > shows equal power
- Woman serving in cafe, she's doing all the work, she's a really gentle person and is kind to all the customers
- Woman working, she's sitting in front with one of her staff standing behind her in the background

- Woman and man sharing business, woman has her feet up and makes man go out to do work > shows that she is important and the more powerful one
- Argument between woman and man - fast cutting edits - use of shot reverse shot
- Close up's of a woman's face during emotional scenes to show the feminist act
- Woman's costume = silk dressing gown > this could be shown as that she's a sex object
- When driving off, there is sounds of beeping cars, car fumes, music and talking

Today's Lesson

In today's lesson we started with looking at stereotypical traits and we had to act these out and think how these things would be shown.

Sound Analysis - The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

The sound can tell you a lot about the location and the environment as noises in the background represent a particular place. For example, when listening to just the piece of music from the clip, they have carefully chosen a piece of music in which sounds like they are in the desert. The bird noises also show the environment as the type of bird noises in which we hear. The scraping of the sand sound also shows the audience that the scene is set in a desert as this is where you would most likely expect to hear the sound of sand. The whistling of the wind also helps to set the scene. 

When watching the clip, the fact that one man was on the floor and high angle shots were used on him whilst the other two characters are standing up high which show's their power - a lot more than the other man. This clip's sound, link's to masculinity as there are harsh noises and the audience would automatically represent masculinity.  

Another important aspect of the sound is that both cowboys have the same piece of music used for them but they are played with different instruments and different pitch and tone which would show the difference between the two characters.

Camera Analysing Meaning

We have used proxemic codes when both Amy and Rory are standing either side of the door, both close as they can to it, this shows that they do have a close relationship as they are facing each other, really close together but there is something between them (the door).

When Amy and Rory are next to the door they are both facing each other while they are having their conversation.

The first shot we chose was a low angle shot of the Doctor, which gave the Doctor power. After, a high angle shot of Rory was used to make Rory seem weak as he was getting emotional. A high angle shot of Amy was used to also make her look weak. There was another high angle shot of Rory to again make him look weak while he was struggling with his decision. Another high angle shot of Amy is used when she admits to herself that the other Amy is in there with hi. High angle shot's are used again when both Amy and Rory are upset, this really makes them look weak here. The Doctor is the most powerful character all the way through the sequence, he is given power not only from using a low angle shot on him but he is given even more power from the fact both of the other two characters have a lot of high angle shot's used on them which makes the Doctor a lot more powerful.

In the second shot, a close up is used of Rory's face. Then in the third shot, another close up is used but of the Doctor's face. The fourth shot shows another close up of Rory's face while he is crying. The seventh and eighth shots are both close up's of Amy's face, one in which she is crying in. Then in the ninth shot, a close up of Rory is used, his face, showing him crying. The eleventh shot is again a close up of Rory's face while he doesn't know what to do and is upset and what his decision has to make on. The thirteenth shot is also a close up but of Rory's hand as he is locking the door so that Amy can not come in. The fifteenth shot is a close up of Rory's face and then the sixteenth of Amy's face. The last seventeenth shot is of Rory's eyes as he is crying which shows the audience the emotion. In this scene a lot of close up's were used as it was a very emotional and intense scene.

The movement between the shots at first was quite fast as the conversation was intense between the Doctor and Rory as Rory had to start making his decision. But then the rest of the scene was quite slow movements as it was very emotional.

Your gender is your stereotypical behaviour and your sex is whether you're male or female.

1940/1950's - women were there to look at and to just agree with whatever the male said.

We watched a video clip and picked out the differences between then and now:
- the man proposes then
- the man was in the driving seat
- the man worked while the woman works as his wife at home
- man is active and powerful
- woman is submissive and expects the marriage proposal
- the man got the women fired but she wasn't bothered by it, she was happy

We decided that you can say if editing looks masculine or feminine.

Traditional Masculinity in HBO ROME

 This shot is a close up of the leader's face and is the first shot in the clip showing that he is a very important character. The close up gives us the advantage to see the expression on his face - anger.

 This shot is taken from a birds eye view meaning that it is a high angle shot. It gives us the impression that these people aren't as important as it is looking down on them. However, we can see that they are all working as a pack and as we see later on, we see that when they are not working together, things go wrong.

 This shot is a low angle shot, giving the leader importance and making him look so much better than the rest.





This shot is another close up showing emotion - impatience.

 This shot shows us violence and anger and goes into a low angle shot giving power out.

 This shot makes the man look weak and powerless as it is a high angle shot - again to make him look less. And the fact he just got hit straight onto the floor.

In this scene the man is getting punished and is being whipped, we see a few high angle shots belittling the man and some close ups of his face and showing how he is trying his best to keep any emotion in to look stronger and look more like a man. He makes a sarcastic comment after to make it look like it was nothing when we know that it must have hurt a lot, 'is that it? I was just beginning to enjoy myself' 

Traditional Masculinity, Male Gaze, Modern Masculinity, Post Feminism

Male Gaze
Male Gaze was how men looked at women, how women looked at themselves and how women look at each other. To show this, we watched a film clip which showed us that in TV Drama's the woman was less dominant as before she came out she had to be introduced instead of just coming out. Then they had close up's of the female's body, showing that her beauty was there to look at, giving her less power and almost making her look stupid. They used a snake as a phalic object around her body. Although they were trying to show that this female was only there to look at she sure showed and gained back her power when all the men in the room stopped what they were doing to stare at her and would do whatever she said, like they were under her power. She pushed them around and they didn't say or do anything about it.

Traditional Masculinity 
Traditional Masculinity was about how men were powerful and violent. They were all aggressive and all wanted to each look like they were better than one another. This was shown in the clip 'Rome' in which we looked at the men out fighting and how they showed their power and aggression to one another. Low angle shots were used to make some characters look more dominant and high angle shots to make some look less important. The editing creates the scene and it is confusing and fast. It was very aggressive and each man was told what to do which shows the violence. They are all powerful as a team, when they work together. The leader is made to look powerful with the low angle shots and when he stands closer to the camera. No pain or weaknesses are shown.

Modern Masculinity
Modern Masculinity shows how men have changed and how our views on them have changed too. Before, we would only see them looking strong, powerful and violent but in this clip we saw them acting in what we would class as a more feminist way. For example we saw each of them, crying and hugging one another, usually this would have been classed as a stereotypical women way to act. We are also shown this from when the man is sitting on the toilet and is looking through a furniture magazine choosing what furniture would suit him and would look nice in his house, usually you would see females acting in this way. It is also shown a lot in the bit where neither of the two men have been in a fight before so they want to fight each other to say that they have done this, which shows that men no longer have fights and are as violent as we used to see them.

Post Feminism 
Post Feminism is where we see how the opinion of females being submissive changes and shows how they are actually very important and they are given a strong role. We see this with a Doctor Who clip in which the women saves the Doctor and she does this by using violence. It also puts men down as the Doctor is saying how he doesn't agree on violence and is asking what she is doing. However, it makes the female look independent as she is the one defending. The other female in this scene shows her power over the men as she is beautiful and with their lust towards her, they forget what they are supposed to be doing and are concentrated on her. They were drawn to her beauty which makes the male's look stupid as they have no control which gives the female more power.

Summary of Exam

Exam requires you to cover three sections of the criteria:

2. The examples will need to be a full range from each technical area
3. The examples must be appropriate and clearly relevant to the set question

To gain full marks for use of terminology, the terminology must be relevant and accurate.
